Govt nod to pay hike; agitating civil servants boycott talks after arrests

In the wake of continuous demonstrations and blockade inside Singha Durbar, the government on Thursday agreed to raise the salary of the government employees. A cabinet meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar, who is working as the acting PM, agreed to hike the salary. The Ministry of Finance has been asked to determine the ratio of increase after negotiation with the representatives of the agitating government employees. The Ministry also decided to strongly deal with the government employees' protest inside Singha Durbar, which has hampered administrative works. Meanwhile, the agitating civil servants have refused to sit for talks called by the Finance Minister this afternoon, protesting the arrest of their colleagues from a demonstration earlier today. Police arrested nearly 200 protesters after they obstructed vehicular movement in and out of Singha Durbar.

Employees in different government-owned corporations also started protests from today. On Wednesday, works at different ministries inside Singha Durbar were affected due to the protest of government employees. The government employees had launched protests from Tuesday, a day after the Finance Minister presented the budget for the fiscal year 2009/10. The Finance Minister didn't announce any pay hike but he said the dearness allowances for the government employees had been increased.
